News Flash! Toilet Paper Update

I Wish!

I’ve already posted three -count ‘em- three articles here on the art and science of toilet paper storage, and you’d think that would be enough.  My last entry on the topic compared what I felt were among the most sensible brands for both price and storability, and with that I assumed this toilet paper business was (ahem) behind me.

But wait! Stop the presses! Just at the last minute we have discovered a late entry. Continue reading

Sheltering in Place vs. Bugging Out

Sheltering in Place – There are many reasons one would have to stay where they are at, family, finances, job, time, etc.  If you have to stay where you’re at, there are things you can do to increase your odds at surviving at your location, like fortifying your home.  The bottom line here is making your home as difficult as possible to break into, in other words, a fort.

How To Clean Your Silver Coins

The headline above is guaranteed to horrify any serious coin collectors who come upon it, as there is a hard and fast rule in the world of coin collecting that says you should never, never, EVER attempt to clean valuable coins.  And that’s true.  If you own coins that have collectible value above their silver content, the last thing you want to do is scrub them clean.  Even the most careful cleaning can leave tiny microscopic abrasions that will reduce the value of a true collectible.  What appears to a normal person as an ugly yellow-brown accumulation of tarnish is often valued in the numismatic community as the coin’s “patina.”

Survival Recycling

In surviving a worse case scenario disaster, everything you have in your possession will have to last you indefinitely along with foraging for what you need.  This will be due to no supply truck running, civil unrest and crime waves destroying businesses and homes, and devastation from natural disasters.  So recycling everything feasible will be the norm after any major disaster.

The Toilet Paper Conspiracy, Part Two

In my last installment, I noted how the manufacturers of bathroom tissue have been shrinking the size of the sheets and the number of sheets per roll in order to keep abreast of price inflation.  One recent trick is that manufacturers have enlarged the diameter of the cardboard roll in the middle, so the overall size of the roll remains the same but you don’t notice there is much less actual paper wrapped around that cardboard center.

Today I’ll compare four different brands so readers can better decide which is the better buy. Continue reading

Preparedness Volunteer Opportunities, part II

Last time I wrote about a few community-based volunteer opportunities for people who are interested in helping others prepare.  Local opportunities are great because many emergencies affect particular regions.  There are other types of preparedness volunteer opportunities that are not location based, and these may be what you’re looking for.

Survival Footwear

Whatever the century or the technology, the way we get from here to there has always been a matter for comparison and often-heated debate.  Modest though they are, feet are the survivalist’s wheels, his/hers hooves, chariots, wings.  It’s our feet that do our drudge work step by step.  Finding the right footwear/boots is easily the most important decision a backpacker makes.  But it is easier said than done.
