One of the major basics for a car kit (or any emergency type kit) that we haven’t covered yet is food. I would recommend having at least 1 day’s worth of calories (2,400). If you have multiple people that you tote around, then be sure to include 1 day’s worth for each person/family member. Let us all cross our fingers that you will not be enduring your car emergency for more than a day. But if you have the space, a 3 day supply would be ideal, just to be safe.
What types of food you include depends on who uses your car. At this point in my life, I have little ones, so I keep a can of formula handy. If you have a pet that travels with you frequently, think about storing something for them. But for the majority of motorists out there, you can get by on non descript essentials.
Things to think about:
- Shelf life/expiration date: The longer the food will last the better. Be aware of when your stored food expires.
- Temperature Tolerance: Will it melt? Will is spoil? The interior of your car experiences extreme hot and cold temps, and that can affect the proper storage of some foods.
- Size: Be sure it won’t be taking up too much room.
- Caloric Intake: It is not worth storing if its not going to give you the energy you need.
Here are some suggestions to get you started.
- High Calorie Bars: These are compact, light weight, temperature tolerant and contain a substantial amount of calories.
- Dried Fruit: High in carbs (but not in protein, so be sure this isn’t all you have), small, and temperature tolerant.
- MREs (Meals ready to eat). These are full meals packed into one container. Some require water to hydrate. But they will have a good amount of calories, are small and generally tolerate heat pretty well (but not for sustained periods), and cold very well. Be sure to read the specific instructions for the MRE you choose to include.
