Like I said in a previous article, there are three types of food one should consider investing in for your survival food stores:  Cans, MRE’s and long shelf life food (dehydrated or freeze dried).

Canned and other foods are good for the short term storage and everyday usage.  You would normally use these foods during a year’s supply of storage while rotating your stock.

Canned foods general have a shelf life anywhere from six to about thirty months.  When shopping for canned food, always inspect the expiration date and the physical condition, making sure there are no dents in the can or along the seals.  Stockers will generally put the freshest cans with the best dates on the back of the shelf behind the older ones up front.  Don’t forget to get a variety of what I talked about in my last article: fruits, meats, vegetables, etc. in large cans that could feed the family.

Besides canned foods, there are other foods that are good for at least three years of storage.  Powdered soup bases and bouillon can make a wide variety of different dishes.

There is also a wide variety of pastas that are excellent for making a great soup base.  Seasonings are another item that stores good for the short term.  Other foods include dried meats like jerky and dried fruits.  Just be sure that there all stored in air tight containers.

MRE’s are good for the interim.  They come with twelve meals per case.  They are heavy and take up a lot of space, so I would recommend having only one case per person stored depending on your situation.  They would come in very handy if you ever had to bug-out and during your movement you could not stop to cook your meals.  However, for extra food at a survival retreat, get as much as you could afford.

Long Shelf Life foods are excellent for the long haul.  Depending on your storage conditions, vacuum sealed dehydrated or freeze dried foods can last anywhere from ten to twenty years.  Just make sure you have a good, clean water supply when it comes time to reconstituting and cooking the food.  Again, you need variety (see last article) with your survival food stores.  Between breads, powdered cheeses, powdered eggs, fruits, meats, powdered milks, vegetables, etc. there is a great variety that can be found in long shelf life foods.  They come in the large #10 cans in cases of six cans per case.  Depending on the company you purchase them from, make sure you get a set of lids to seal the unused portions between meals.
