Did you know that the “experts” recommend chewing at least 21 times before you swallow? I don’t know about you, but I rarely have the luxury of sitting down and chewing my food that thoroughly; besides, broccoli sucks if it doesn’t come with a healthy serving of cheese (which by the way isn’t healthy, especially when you over indulged during the holidays).


The joys of blending are ridiculous, even for a greens hater! The discovery that oats, pecans, spinach, vanilla, forest fruits and mango taste just as amazing as an indulgent dessert has made me a convert. And that’s just breakfast! Plus the fact that your body doesn’t have to waste energy digesting partly chewed food means that mornings are more like “the energizer bunny on red bull” than a zombie trying to figure out why you got him/her out of the grave.

The benefits are endless, like not having food stuck in your teeth, waiting for eggs to cook, or for the super lazy who hate to wash up, just rinse your blender and “voila” dishes are done! You also get more liquid in your diet and it’s a great way to use up all the left over holiday food in your fridge.

If you’re sold and are already looking for the perfect blender, great. If you need more reasons, below are 4 of the most important.

  • Convenience

Smoothies can be made in a flash! In the time it takes for you to eat an apple, you can have a ready to drink healthy meal that can be carried along to work or wherever you’re going.

  • Health

The nutrients in raw food have not been compromised by cooking, which makes them super healthy and easier to assimilate to your body

  • Taste

Let’s face it, everybody hates spinach! Or at least 99% of the world population does. Blending makes everything taste better, considering that you can make your own recipes.

  • Increased fiber intake

Adequate fiber allows for better weight loss and relief from constipation as well as other digestion issues. It is also believed to prevent heart disease, diabetes, cancer, gall and kidney stones. Blending fruits is a quick and easy way to increase your fiber intake.

The four commandments of blending!

  1. Thou shalt use a high end blender (Vitamix or Blendtec is recommended)

In order to be able to blend all of the healthy, vitamin rich, and consequently thick foods, you will need a powerful blender that can handle the job.  Nobody wants a chunky smoothie.


  1. Thou shalt not use a recipe book

The recipes provided are usually the vilest nature.  Not to mention, most people have never heard of half of the ingredients.  If you have a blender recipe book,  burn it, throw it away, use it as a stabilizer for that wobbly kitchen table, but do not follow any of the recipes in it! You can come up with better recipes yourself. Experiment; be as creative as you’d like to be.  Use foods that you are already familiar with, know you like, and are easily accessible.  One of the perks was convenience, right?

  1. Thou shalt not over blend.

In order to benefit from a blended diet, you need to blend as briefly as possible.  Usually less than one minute will suffice.   If you’re doing it for minutes on end, you will compromise the nutritional value!

  1. Thou shalt clean immediately after use

After you finish you’re blending, pour out all the concoction, add water to about half the container level and some dish washing liquid. Blend this for about 20 seconds, and you have a clean blender.

The word immediately is key here! Do not let stuff dry and cake up in your blender.
