Protein is so important for a strong, lean body that can take whatever challenge it meets. You will need strong leg, arm, back, and abdomen muscles to survive and even thrive, when the world changes. Getting into shape now can make a huge difference later, plus being in shape just feels good.

I became convinced of this when a friend and I decided to up our fitness routine with the goal of becoming strong with more endurance. Being consistent and getting plenty of protein really made a huge difference.

Upping my protein intake was one of the biggest factors in gaining a new, stronger and more fit body. The protein helped convert fat to strong, flexible muscle. Now everything from squatting down for an hour while gardening, to lifting my children is so much easier. The results are also outwardly visible on my body.

Don’t forget that in a disaster situation, you may be called upon to perform hard physical labor and do so for an extended length of time. Are your muscles prepared to do this?

Muscle needs protein to stay strong, get stronger and repair itself. Protein also provides long-lasting stamina, and it helps to boost your immune system.  Other body systems rely on it, too, so many body functions will not operate correctly without it. This makes it very important to always have a steady source of protein. Unfortunately, many pantries are lacking in this area.

There are many excellent sources of protein available. Some you can stock ahead of time, while others you may need to catch or grow yourself, depending on the what things look like WTSHTF.

He is a short list of protein sources to stock:

  • Canned tuna, chicken, turkey, ham and corned beef
  • Dried and canned beans
  • Quinoa
  • Whey protein powder
  • TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein) (look for non GMO)
  • Ready-Made protein-rich food storage meals
  • Nuts and nut butters
  • Protein bars

You also may want to start working on the skills (and acquiring the equipment) you will need to find new, fresh sources of protein and to keep it from spoiling. These include:

  • Fishing
  • Trapping
  • Hunting
  • Gardening
  • Canning
  • Smoking/curing
  • Dehydration/making jerky

Don’t neglect the importance of having a steady protein source now or in the future. Get strong and stay strong.
