In times of disaster, it’s important to know some fundamental basics about survival food and about how to grow your own food.  Especially if you are vegetarian and you want the best organic food(s) for your body and nutrition.  Even in times of economic hardships that many of us face today, this guide to how to sprout your own beans can help you and your family save a lot of money.  The advantage is that sprouting beans, lentils, or any pulses creates the production of Vitamin A, B groups, C, and E, which your body needs for energy.  Vegetarians and carnivores alike can enjoy this tasty treat easy and cheaply!

In my example, I used mung beans that I purchased at a Chinese supermarket for a little over $2.  It’ll give me enough seeds to make maybe 7-8 servings of mung beans for 2 people.  Think about the savings for healthy, organic vegetarian food.  This method and technique can be used in your plan for survival food supply demands that your family will need in order to be healthy.

You can sprout just about any beans, lentils, and pulses.  Think mung beans, alfalfa sprouts, garbanzo beans, regular lentils.  Remember to buy organic seeds at your store as some of them contain pesticides which are not healthy at all.




Step 1:  First, You will need either a glass or plastic jar big enough for your sprouts to grow in.  (If the space is too small, it may hinder the growth of your sprouts).  Second, you will need a piece of gauze of any kind – think panty hose, cheese cloth, etc.  I used an old piece of mosquito netting I had.  The purpose is for you to pour water out without the beans falling out of the jar.  Third, you will need a rubber band to secure the gauze over the jar.  Lastly, you will need your beans.


Step 2:  Pour the beans into the jar.  Add enough beans so that you have one layer of beans on the bottom.  In my example, my plastic jar was concave so it wasn’t evenly distributed.  Add drinking water to the jar so it is halfway to the jar so not only does it cover all the beans, but it has a lot of extra water.  We want a great tasting organic vegetarian food supply so it’s important to use drinking water for this step as the waters will soak it up. For bigger beans like garbanzo, I recommend even more water as it needs more water to soak up.  Then put the gauze on the top of the jar and secure with a rubber band.  Let it soak for a few hours.  I like to soak for 2-3 hours for smaller beans and 4-5 for the larger beans.

Step 3:  After soaking, drain the water out thoroughly.  Remember to tilt your jar over for a few minutes and swish the beans around to get rid of most of the water.  Too much water means it can get moldy.


Step 4:  Store in a cool, dark place.

Step 5:  Every morning and night, fill your jar with water over the beans.  You can use drinking water or tap water for this step.  Then tilt the jar and empty the water.  Repeat this step until your beans, lentils, or pulses sprout.


*Outcome for your organic vegetarian food supply:  delicious and fresh bean sprouts!  Usually, it starts sprouting within 3 days.  The results shown here are after 6 days.

Having your own organic vegetarian survival food supply does not have to be hard or expensive.  This is a great way for you to grow your own organic and vegetarian food when there are no stores to go to.  Just keep different types of beans, lentils, and pulses in your home in case of an emergency.  This survival method can also be used if you are on a tight budget trying to save money for your family!
